Most dramatic rise in number of internet users anywhere
2007-03-15
Almost 38% of Poles over 15 years of age have internet access, reflecting growth of more than one-third in comparison with 2005. This is one of the findings of a SMG/KRC survey, quoted by Rzeczpospolita. The rise was the most rapid anywhere in the world.
The increase was prompted by growing competition in the internet services provision market. The operators offered faster connections, and this resulted in more than a million new broadband users. The Office of Electronic Communications (UKE) estimates that there were over 2.8 million broadband subscribers at the end of 2006. TP SA has increased its broadband subscriber base by more than half and had, at the end of December 2006, around 1.7 million customers for this service. The alternative operators GTS Energis and Netia have started offering broadband via the incumbent’s lines, on the basis of WLR agreements, only recently, but have managed to win around 40,000 subscribers. Cable TV operators attracted 200,000-250,000 new customers in 2006.
Gemius, a company which monitors Polish internet use, insists that the increase was also a result of the growing popularity of e-commerce.
