Onet.pl launches IP TV and website for Poles abroad

Onet.pl, the most popular Polish portal, intends to launch a website for Poles living abroad. The service is expected to be available by the end of the second quarter of 2007. The company estimates that, at the moment, around one million users log on every month from the United Kingdom alone.
The new service is designed to provide local information from cities with the largest numbers of Polish citizens. No portal in Poland has, prior to this, launched a website aimed at Poles living and working abroad, although Gazeta Wyborcza has decided to publish in pdf format for them. The new service could help Onet.pl to find new users or to prompt existing ones to linger on the portal.
The company is also preparing for the launch of an online television service, something which its competitors, Interia.pl and Wirtualna Polska, have done already. The existing video service of Onet.pl is to be transformed into Onet TV, an IP TV service, which will permit users to create their own programme schedules. The content will be provided by TVN, a commercial TV station owned by Grupa TVN, the owner of Onet.pl, along with other TV broadcasters.
