Poland creeps remorselessly up the spammer’s league

Poland was ranked as the third worst spammer in the world in the first quarter of 2007 by Sophos, a company which provides IT security solutions. The firm described as “unexpected” the fact that Poland has risen in the ranking.
According to Sophos, 7.4% of all spam messages in the world came from Poland, which means that the country’s “contribution” doubled in comparison with the corresponding period of 2006. The figure is only slightly less than that of China (including Hong Kong), which was responsible for 7.5% of spam. The frontrunner is still the USA, which accounts for almost a fifth of global spam. The company emphasised that India appeared for the first time in the top twelve spam-laden countries but that the UK has dropped out.
Sophos suggested that Polish users should attend to security lapses on their computers. It insists that this might be a serious issue, as the country’s population is much lower than that of countries ranked below it (such as Russia, India and Brazil). Sophos has also stated that the authorities should educate people with regard to safe computing in order to reduce the amount of spam.
