TP SA to build broadband backbone network in Malopolska
2007-04-19
The local authority of the Malopolska region has signed an agreement with TP SA on broadband provision in all communes/municipalities in the region. The incumbent will develop the broadband infrastructure in such a way that in 2012 90% of households in the region and all companies will have access.
The agreement is part of a project called the Malopolska Broadband Network (MSS). It is designed to enable all end users to download at speeds of up to 6 Mbps and to upload at a maximum of 1 Mbps. The project will be funded chiefly by European Union funds.
The network to be constructed will be owned by the local authorities and will be available to all operators who wish to offer services to end users. The network’s operator will be chosen by means of a tender and will not offer its services directly to end users.
Broadband for the 10% or so of households not within reach of the backbone network will probably be provided by means of radio technologies such as WiMAX.
