Data sheet – April 2007

The European Commission reported that in October 2006 broadband penetration in Poland stood at 4.53%, which reflects a year-on-year increase of almost three percentage points. Despite the rapid growth, Poland remains among the EU countries with the lowest penetration, as the EU25 average in October 2006 was 15.7%.
The Firefox internet browser is growing in popularity in the Central and Eastern Europe countries. The use rate of this software in March 2007 fell short of that in November 2006 only in Estonia and Hungary, while the most significant growth was observed in the Czech Republic. XiTi Monitor reported that the all-Europe leader was Slovenia, with a penetration rate of almost 45%. Poland was ranked as the fourth country in terms of Firefox penetration, with a rate of 35%.
The XiTi study was conducted upon 91,663 websites.
Poland and Lithuania have been identified as the countries with the highest proportion of pre-paid users among mobile telephony subscribers among Central and Eastern European EU members. In both countries, pre-paid users accounted for 66% of mobile subscribers. The lowest rate of pre-paid users in the region was observed in Estonia, where only 39% of mobile phones are pre-paid.
Mobile number portability (MNP) has not gained much popularity in the CEE region, according to a report by the European Commission. The highest proportion in the region is reported for Estonia, whose mobile users have ported 6.2% of their numbers to another network. Slovakia was ranked as the country with the lowest rate of ported numbers in the entire EU, as only 0.04% of its numbers have been ported. By way of comparison, the highest rate in the EU was observed in Finland, where 64% of the country’s numbers were transferred to another network.
The low rates in the CEE might be explained somewhat by the fact that the introduction of the MNP service did not take place at the same time as in other countries and that it was introduced fairly recently.
