Polkomtel to build broadband infrastructure
2007-06-01
Polkomtel, the operator of the Plus and Sami Swoi mobile networks, intends to build a fibre-optic network across the entire country in order to be able to provide internet access services. The company says that demand for data transmission services is growing because of the increasing number of clients and amount of traffic within its network.
Polkomtel has reported that data transmission traffic over its network increased by 962% last year, prompted chiefly by rises in the subscriber numbers of iPlus, a wireless internet access service. The operator claims that growth will continue. The company has not, however, announced a tender for the construction of the fibre-optic network but is collecting offers.
The company’s CEO, Jaroslaw Bauc, has stated before that Polkomtel was considering offering broadband in addition to wholesale line rental (WLR) on the basis of an agreement with TP SA. WLR should be available by the end of the year, although the exact date has not been disclosed.
