Government: 50% broadband penetration in 2013
2007-06-28
The government has adopted a plan for the development of broadband infrastructure in Poland for 2007-2013. The document predicts that the broadband penetration rate will increase to 50% in six years’ time.
According to the government, the penetration figure at the moment is 6%. This should increase to 15% within three years and climb to 50% in 2013. The plan envisages supporting the development of broadband infrastructure in the countryside in order to reduce the distance between cities and rural areas in terms of internet access availability. To achieve this, the government intends to remove the legal obstacles which hamper telecommunications investments, to subsidise the construction of the infrastructure and support new technologies in the field of data transmission. The Office of Electronic Communications (UKE) is expected to work on assuring conditions for competition which would lead to price reductions.
The government emphasises that, despite the substantial rise in the number of broadband lines, Poland had one of the lowest broadband penetration rates in the European Union.
