Data sheet – June 2007

2007-06-28

Almost 270,000 notebooks were sold in Poland in the first quarter of the year. This reflects a 67.3% increase in comparison with the corresponding period of 2006. The front runner was Acer with almost 57,000 laptops sold, while Toshiba, the Q1 2006 leader, was pushed to the third place in the ranking as Fujitsu Siemens became the runner-up. The top ten producers had over 90% of the notebook market in Poland in Q1 2007.
Acer recorded an over 80% increase year-on-year in sales volume and Fujitsu Siemens’ sales grew by almost 70%. The most substantial increases were recorded by LG Electronics and MSI: 175% and 120% respectively.

In April 2007, Google was still the leader amongst the most popular websites in Poland, in terms of monthly reach and number of real users. More than three quarters of Poles using the internet entered the search engine website at least once. The top five remained unchanged with Onet.pl, Wirtualna Polska and Interia.pl internet portals and Allegro.pl, the online auctioning service. Of those five websites, all but Google have increased the number of real users in contrast with the figure of March 2007. Google lost 147,190 users. However, its position seems unthreatened as in April it had almost a million real users more than Onet.pl.

Gadu-Gadu remains the most popular instant messenger software in Poland. In April 2007, its monthly reach exceeded 42%. Skype, the most prominent competitor of Gadu-Gadu, recorded a reach 15 percentage points lower than that of the leader. Skype has increased the number of users by more than 400,000, while Gadu-Gadu had around 30,000 users more in contrast with March 2007.

The IT market in the Central and Eastern European (CEE) region is worth $37bn, according to IDC. The most prominent share is held by hardware, which accounts for 62% of the value. This is specific to the region, as the Western European markets are dominated by IT services (45% of the value). Poland follows the pattern observed in the CEE although hardware is not as predominant as in the region as a whole. Services account for 30% of the Polish IT market.
