Poles buying more Christmas food online

In 2009, Poles intend to spend PLN 40m (€9.6m) on Christmas food via online stores, according to
Gazeta Prawna. e-retailers estimate that 2009 will bring healthier results in comparison with the corresponding period of last year. According to Grzegorz Bielecki, the deputy chairman of the online grocery
A.pl, the store reports a 100% increase in orders during the Christmas season. In addition,
E-piotripawel.pl, the online branch of the
Piotr i Pawel delicatessen chain, reports a 10% increase in orders and a 70% increase in the number of
customers during the Christmas month, in comparison with the analogous period of 2008.
According to Sklepy24.pl, the number of e-delicatessen stores which offer food has increased by 74% over the last two years. At present there are around 200
online supermarkets in Poland; these account for 3% of all Polish e-stores and generate turnover of PLN 200m (€48m). E-sales of food have increased by around 30% per year, and the rate of growth is expected to remain at a similar level for the next few years.
