Polkomtel terminates contract with mPunkt

2009-12-30

Polkomtel, the mobile operator of Plus, Sami Swoi and 36.6, has terminated the agency contract with mPunkt Polska. The contract will expire on 31 March 2010. Most probably the termination is a result of the fact that Punkt has been acquired by Cyfrowy Polsat, controlled by Zygmunt Solorz-Zak and listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange.
To date, mPunkt has been the largest distributor of Polkomtel, and is responsible for 20% of the sales of the latter company. According to mPunkt’s management, the operator decided to terminate the agreement in order to re-negotiate the terms of the contract.
At present, Cyfrowy Polsat’s offer does not offer competition to Polkomtel’s products. In 2010, however, Cyfrowy Polsat plans to broaden its offer by the Internet and mobile services. Nevertheless, the latter company announced that it will negotiate with Polkomtel in order to sign a new agreement.
The mPunkt chain comprises 200 stores while the second largest distributor of Plus, in terms of number of outlets, is Liberty Poland.
