Rural areas without access to broadband Internet

2010-07-15

According to a recent report by the Office of Electronic Communications (UKE), only 13.5% of Poles have access to broadband Internet, as Gazeta Prawna reported. In Swietokrzyskie and Opolskie voivodships, 2.1% of residents have access to broadband Internet, while in Lubuskie and Podlaskie voivodships the figures are 2.5% and 2.8%, respectively. These figures are, however, inflated by large cities, while in the rural areas high-speed connections virtually do not exist. Among regions with the most developed access to broadband Internet are Mazowieckie voivodship (16%), Wielkopolskie (14.6%) and Slaskie (11.6%). Within European Union member states only Romania and Bulgaria have lower broadband access (13%), while Netherlands and Denmark boast of the highest access of 37.7% and 37.8%, respectively.

Due to the shortage of high-speed connections, the popularity of mobile Internet access is growing in Poland. Within one year the number of mobile Internet users has doubled and at present, 5% of Poles use it.
