The value of the telecommunications services market in Poland in 2009, as measured in zloty, decreased by 3% to PLN 39.5bn., mainly because of a systematic fall in the value of the fixed-line telephony sector. In 2009, the index of fixed-line telephony penetration for Poland decreased to 22.2%; penetration in urban areas went down to 29.4%, while in rural areas it fell to 11%.

The largest part of the Polish telecommunication market is still represented by the mobile sector. The mobile telephony penetration, defined as a relation of the total number of active SIM cards to the population size, rose from 115.7% in 2008 to 117.4% in 2009.

In comparison with 2008, the total length of the telecommunications network decreased by 1 566km in 2009, due to a significant fall (over 52%) in the length of overhead lines. Concurrently, the length of the fibre optics network grew by around 17%, to 39,146 km.

The number of exchanges is growing systematically (there were 116 exchanges in 2009); so is the number of base stations. The year 2009 also brought dynamic growth of the absolute number of sent SMSs, which increased to 48 billion. An average mobile user in Poland in 2009 sent 1,024 SMSs and 4 MMSs. The total number of minutes called per year is also growing; in 2009, statistically speaking, every subscriber talked 1,091 minutes, while a year earlier, it was 954.

The economic slowdown and the mood it has brought on were the main reasons why the total value of the IT market in Poland in 2009 dropped to the level of PLN 24.2bn. The dynamics of the market were negative and reached even more than -10%. The largest part of the Polish IT market in 2009 remained the hardware segment with the total value of PLN 10.8bn.
