The value of the Polish telecommunications services market in 2008, as measured in zloty, increased by 5.6% to PLN 40.9bn. Over the past three years, the mobile sector has been the largest segment of the Polish telecommunications market. Despite the fact that its revenue growth declined to approx. 7% in 2007 - for the first time in six years to one-digit number, during the 2007 mobile operators still reported the highest margins recorded within the telecoms industry. In 2008 the mobile market recovered recording dynamics of approx. 10%. The overall profitability of the Polish telecommunications sector is therefore mostly dependent on the high profits generated by the mobile telephony.

Fixed-line telephony penetration in Poland has fallen systematically since 2004. In 2007 this index for Poland decreased below 28%; penetration in urban areas went down to 30.1%, while in rural areas to 13.1%.

The total length of the telecommunications network is growing constantly in Poland - in 2007 it reached over 676,564 km in total, mostly due to the growth of the fibre optics segment. In comparison with 2006, the length of the fiber optics network in 2007 grew by around 35%, to 32,212 km. 2007 also brought change in the number of exchanges (there were 82), as well as dynamic growth of base stations. The flatter category rose by almost 10%.

An average mobile user in Poland in 2007 sent 35% more SMSs than the year before. In absolute numbers for the whole market, in 2006 Poles sent almost 40 bn SMSs. Concurrently, the total number of minutes called per year is also growing; in 2007, an average telephone user talked 823 minutes, while a year earlier it was 700.

As the number of broadband subscribers in Poland increases, so grows penetration, which is defined as a relation of the total number of broadband lines (both corporate and residential) to the population size. In 2008, the ratio expanded by over 30%, to almost 12%. The total value of the IT market in Poland amounted to almost PLN 27bn in 2008. Among the sectors of the market, the biggest share belongs to hardware (almost 46%), although its growth rate is lower than in the case of the services segment. The dynamics of the last one reached almost 21% in 2008. The smallest sector of the Polish IT market remains software with dynamics of 14% in 2008.
